Fertility in Men
Males with active IBD tend to have decreased sperm counts. However, once their symptoms have gone into remission, their sperm counts become normal.
In men with IBD, certain immunosuppressive medications used for IBD and related immune disorders may affect fertility. For example, sulfasalazine and methotrexate have been found to affect male fertility by decreasing sperm counts and motility.
The effect of these medications on fertility are reversible. Men should stop taking sulfasalazine and methotrexate, and consider switching to an alternative medication at least three months before trying to father a child. Speak with your healthcare team to discuss your options.
